Thiruvathirai Kali Recipe (English)

 Thiruvathirai kali - Recipe

THIRUVATHIRA KALI

Thiruvathira Kali and Thalagam are the most important naivedhyam items offered to lord Shiva on the day of Thiruvathira. The interesting point is Kali is a sweet made from jiggery and Thalagam is a spicy kootu made out of 5-7 vegetables. The combination is very yummy and is also the favorite dish of lord Shiva. The auspicious time to offer this to lord shiva is early in the morning before sunrise.

KALI

Ingredients:

Raw Rice   - 1 cup
Jaggery     - 1
1/2 cup
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Cardomom powder - 1tsp.
Ghee          -  5 tbsp.

Preparation:

Wash the raw rice well and dry it in a cotton cloth. Roast the dried rice to brown color and grind it as soft powder. Put the jaggery in a large bottomed kadai with 3 cups of water and boil it till Jaggery is completely melted in the water. When the mixture starts boiling, reduce the heat and add the roasted raw rice flour stir slowly and evenly. When all the rice flour has been added, keep stirring well until the rice flour is well cooked. Now add the roasted grated coconut, cashew and ghee and mix well.
Thiruvadhirai Kali is ready to offer .

The kali should have a shining surface when done.

This kali can be prepared in a pressure cooker also with more ease. The Kali can be prepared adding moong dhal also. Those who dont have time can prepare it by directly roasting the raw rice instead of drying in order to save time, but the best results are when it is prepared traditionally.
